Masonry Repair
Masonry repairs can be monumental tasks that sometimes seem impossible. Experience, knowledge, and skill are critical to achieve successful lifelong masonry repairs. We have over 25yrs of combined hands on experience in masonry repair.
A masonry chimney can be repaired by tuckpointing or repointing the mortar between the bricks. This is done by grinding out the old mortar with a power tool and laying fresh mortar in its place to repair the bond between the bricks.
If left unresolved the damaged mortar joints will continue to deteriorate until they are completely eroded. When this occurs the structural integrity of the entire masonry chimney becomes compromised. Eventually leading to a chimney that cannot be repaired and must be rebuilt.
In cases where repointing is not sufficient to repair a masonry chimney then the chimney must be rebuilt. This is done by taking the chimney apart brick by brick down to where the mortar bonding the bricks together is still strong. Then rebuilding the chimney from this area up.

When the fireplace does not function properly it will deter the occupants from using the fireplace at all. This may seem like the appropriate solution. To just stop using it and forget its there. However, this actually allows the damages to progress and become more significant. When left unresolved, a simple cosmetic issue can morph into a full scale restoration project over time. Don't be the person that let ,what would have been, a $500 repair two years ago, turn into a $5000 restoration.
The firebox is the visible area where the logs go, and is what most people refer to as the fireplace. It is important to understand that the fireplace is only a portion of the entire chimney system. There are many functional areas throughout the entire chimney system that must work correctly in order for the fireplace to perform properly.

Fireplace replacement
Replacing a fireplace successfully requires significant planning and preparation to achieve the highest degree of safety and the wow factor. PRIORITY NUMBER 1 IS SAFETY. Priority 1.5 is looking the part. The mechanics of the fireplace work autonomously and the results are intangible for the most part. Permits and inspections ensure the mechanics of the fireplace are safely installed and will operate without issue. The interior design will be what you actually have to live with everyday.
The interior finish typically has 4 design/buying decisions:
The interior finish typically has 4 design/buying decisions:
- Wall Finish; Usually stacked stone, natural stone, granite, or tile.
- Hearth/Floor; Usually a granite slab, tile, or slate.
- Mantel; Floating or Traditional.
- Glass Doors; based on fireplace type and size.
Flue repair
Premier Chimney and Roofing is a certified HeatShield installer, licensed and factory trained.
HeatShield is used to reline the existing chimney flue to repair cracks, gaps, or damage. An acid wash is done to prep the surface of the flue. A plug and winch is then used to apply the material to the existing flue lining in a series of layers. This eliminates the need to remove the existing flue.
Not all chimneys can be relined with stainless steel systems because it almost always requires the existing flue to be removed. In many cases the damaged flue may be housed in a chimney with multiple flues that serve other fireplaces/furnaces. The flues are usually in close proximity and cannot be removed without causing damage to the neighboring flues. Flue removal is destructive and will almost always cause cracking in the other flues.
This system is backed by a Lifetime manufacturers warranty. More detailed information is available directly from the manufacturers website. Click HERE to visit the HeatShield website for more information.

Chimney relining
A chimney relining is needed when the existing chimney lining is cracked, severely deteriorated, or has gaps. When one or more of these conditions exist in a chimney lining it must be corrected before continuing use of the fireplace or connected appliance.
In this case the chimney must be relined with a UL approved chimney relining system that has been tested and approved to the UL 1777 standard. We only install UL approved stainless steel liner systems that come with a manufacturers lifetime warranty and lifetime labor warranty.
The stainless steel is fully insulated with either UL approved foil backed insulation wrap, or UL approved pour in chimney insulation. The light weight pour in insulation is cost effective, safe, and has mortar like properties that strengthen the chimney structure. After a chimney is relined by Premier Chimney and Roofing it will be safe to use and more structurally sound.

Chimney crown repair
The chimney crown is the concrete cap, covering the last row of bricks, at the very top. When the crown cracks it allows water to enter the chimney through the concrete cap directly into the brick work. This allows erosion of the flue joints in the flue lining and will deteriorate the chimney from the inside out. Repair and seal the crown immediately if you see any cracking, chipping, or peeling.
A chimney crown repair requires some masonry work to prep the existing crown surface properly. Then a rubberized masonry sealer is troweled onto the surface and pushed around for even coverage. After coverage is 100% complete the surface is spritzed and brushed smooth to eliminate air bubbles.

Damper replacement and repair
The damper opens and closes the fireplace flue. If the damper does not open properly smoke will come back into the room and is very dangerous. If the damper does not close properly there will likely be a noticeable draft that will spike your energy bill. If the damper isn't functioning properly it is important to replace or repair it because a damper malfunction can cost thousands of dollars in smoke damage and be a hazard to the occupants.
If your damper is not damaged and works fine, but you still feel a draft you can replace it with these energy efficient top dampers. They have much more efficient seals and operate much easier than traditional cast iron or steel dampers.
Top sealing dampers come with lifetime manufacturers warranty and lifetime labor warranty.

Refractory panels
Refractory panels are installed along the walls and floor of prefabricated fireplaces. They are often cracked or damaged over time. They need to be replaced periodically when they become cracked or damaged.
We will remove the existing panels. Cut new panels to the exact shape and size of the original factory panels. Then install them as they were intended to be straight from the fireplace manufacturer.

Wood stove installation
Wood stoves come in many shapes and sizes. Premier Chimney and Roofing has installed hundreds of them. From the stone or tile hearth to the final touches. A wood stove can be installed several different ways.
Usually, a wood stove is installed to run straight through the attic and out through the roof. This requires careful planning to avoid ceiling joists and roof rafters. The flashing must be installed properly to prevent leakage. There are many details that must be considered.
A wood stove can also be vented through an exterior wall and then run up the side of the house. This is less common due to the amount of exposed pipe, and the look. The chimney pipe running up the wall can be a bit of an eye sore. However, this installation makes finding the location for the stove much easier.
A wood stove can also vent into a masonry chimney. NEVER vent a wood stove into a prefab fireplace.
In any situation Premier Chimney and Roofing can formulate and execute the perfect wood stove installation.

Smoke chamber
The smoke chamber is an important part of the chimney system. It funnels the smoke and heat from the fireplace into the flue. Historically smoke chambers have been the source of significant amounts of fire related losses. When a smoke chamber is formed by corbelled masonry it creates several issues. First, the corbelling creates deep corners at each step that builds creosote pockets rapidly. These pockets are dangerous fuel sources for a chimney fire. Second, it creates turbulence in the system which reduces draft and increases creosote build up throughout the system. Also, if there are any gaps, voids, or cracks in the masonry it will allow heat transfer. The smoke chamber has its own dedicated section in the residential building codes that require a corbelled smoke chamber to be parged with refractory mortar.
We only use UL tested and approved smoke chamber refractory mortar. The smoke chamber must be properly prepared before applying the refractory mortar. We follow the manufacturers specifications in every step of the process to make sure we meet the UL tested and approved listing.
